Everything the Hogwarts Legacy Map Tells Us About the World

Hogwarts Legacy has been promoted as an open-world game, and a quick look at its map shows that it may be bigger and bigger than expected.

A behind-the-scenes part of the recent PlayStation State of Play for Hogwarts Legacy offered a very brief look at the game’s map, or at least part of it. The open-world action RPG will allow players to explore the eponymous school of witchcraft and wizardry, as well as its grounds and the surrounding region. While this Hogwarts Legacy The gameplay preview has been quite long, there is still a lot to reveal about the game, including the size of its explorable area.

Players will enter Hogwarts as a fifth-year student who is a late start to his magical education for reasons yet unknown. A special program has been put in place to align the player’s academic progress with that of his peers, which appears to be overseen by Professor Eleazar Fig. Among the many extracurricular activities provided in the game, players will travel with Fig and possibly other students. (or even alone) beyond the grounds of Hogwarts. Hogsmeade will be a major point of interest, but the Scottish countryside around the school will also feature other villages, monuments and secrets.

During the brief look during the inventory, the Hogwarts Legacy the map revealed more than Hogwarts – in fact, the school doesn’t appear in the teased area at all. Provided the game world hasn’t undergone very drastic changes since this concept map was created (shown below), the game will have a surprisingly large explorable area. Hogwarts, its grounds, and other landmarks immediately surrounding it – like the Forbidden Forest and the Great Lake – seem to be just a fraction of the open world.

What can be seen on the Hogwarts Legacy preview map

Concept map shown during Hogwarts Legacy gameplay preview doesn't even include the school

This piece of map already looks pretty big, and it’s just one piece of the total game world. The numbers seem to indicate sectors, and if 6-6 were a corner of the map, and assuming the opposite corner would be 1-1, that whole region would only be about a sixth of the game world’s total footprint However, there’s no indication that it’s a corner of the whole map, which means it could very well be much larger. Hogwarts Legacy allows players to explore unseen school locations, but it also appears to provide vast expanses of wilderness.

This single section of the map is quite varied in its terrain. Rivers, streams, ponds and a lake cover the area, even being concentrated in one section to create what looks like a marsh. The mountains rise above the surrounding forests, and rocky outcrops provide space for grass-covered plateaus. This part of the map doesn’t appear to contain any significant villages, although there are many buildings scattered throughout.

More relevant to gameplay, the map is littered with icons that look like little black obelisks. It’s hard to guess exactly what they’re for, as some are located next to important buildings or landmarks while others are right in the middle of the woods. Another, less common type of icon appears to be some kind of door, possibly indicating something like the dungeons reported in a recent Hogwarts Legacy to run away. As the game nears its Holiday 2022 release date, more information will almost certainly be revealed, including more gameplay that shows just how dense the open world really is. Hogwarts Legacy was known for being an open-world game, but only this section of the map seems to suggest a much larger explorable area than many would have guessed.
