Last summer, the Minnesota Vikings traded a 4th round draft pick to the New York Jets for tight end Chris Herndon. He was targeted seven times during the Vikings’ 2021 offense.
This summer, quarterback Baker Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers for a conditional 5th-round pick, which can become a 4th-round pick if Mayfield takes at least 70% of the offensive snaps for Carolina this season.
Mayfield’s price was incredibly low.
A 5th round is usually the asking price for an RB2 like Matt Breida (2020) or Kenyan Drake (2019). Hell, the Vikings traded a 5th-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for kicker Kaare Vedvick three years ago.
Mayfield will take control of the 2022 Panthers offense with a chance to “prove” it to QB1 unless rookie Matt Corral has a 2012 Russell-Wilson-style training camp and preseason. Other passers-by on the list, Sam Darnold, PJ Walker and Davis Cheek, shouldn’t be considered threats to Mayfield’s job, so it’s his gig to take.
A look back at Deshaun Watson’s trade package, who replaced Mayfield in Cleveland. This carry happened less than four months ago (the Browns also received a 6th round in addition to Watson):
- 2022 1st round pick
- 2023 1st round pick
- 2024 1st round pick
- 2023 3rd Round Pick
- 2022 4th Round Pick
- 2024 4th Round Pick
Mayfield salvaged a 5th round – and the other payment by the team of 68% of his salary in 2022 ($15.5 million). He also took a $3.5 million pay cut to make the deal work.
He has a spread of 92 touchdowns to 56 interceptions, a remarkable mark for a young quarterback. The 92 touchdowns rank 12th in the NFL over the past four years. But in 2021, Mayfield played through injury in a bit of a tough display, which is generally praised by fans. The bold effort didn’t do the quarterback justice, ranking Mayfield 30th per By football goal among all the passers-by.
The Vikings were linked to Mayfield by ESPN’s Dan Graziano last month, who called Minnesota “an example of a place where Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo wouldn’t start right away but could position themselves as a starter.” team in 2023, as Winston did with the Saintes in 2020.
It didn’t materialize.
The Mayfield trade is unlikely to impact future quarterback trades – especially during the annual quarterback carousel from February to April – but summer deals could be the scarlet letter for trades. quarterback in the future. Because only two teams needed quarterbacks — the Panthers and arguably the Seattle Seahawks — a bidding war wasn’t too robust.
And, afterwards, Mayfield left Ohio for the price of an unused RB2 or Vikings tight end.
