Two people have died and three others are in hospital after their rental boat capsized on the Hudson River in New York on Thursday.

About 13 people were on board when the boat capsized, according to CBS News, and some of them got stuck under the boat when it overturned. New York first responders received the call around 2:46 p.m. and other boats and ferries rushed to the scene to help.

The names of the victims have not been released, but they are reportedly a 7-year-old boy and a 50-year-old woman.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, which also responded to the scene, a small craft advisory was in effect at the time of the capsizing, meaning waves on the river were rougher for small vessels.
