511 Wisconsin adds thousands of miles to road condition map

EAU CLAIRE CO., Wis. (WEAU) – With two cycles of winter weather expected Monday evening and Tuesday, the roads are likely to become slippery.

A map seeks to help drivers navigate winter road conditions.

“You can tell if things are good for driving in winter or on slippery, snowy, ice-covered sections,” said Stacey Pierce, traffic management unit supervisor at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). .

Launched in 2013, WisDOT uses 511 Wisconsin to report road conditions statewide.

This year, the program has undergone a major update.

“We recently added over 10,000 additional miles of new roads that have winter road conditions,” Pierce said.

Pierce said the system is also updating more frequently than before.

“It’s a computerized model, and so it’s an automated system, which is great that we can get those conditions 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” Pierce said.

For winter road conditions, Pierce said the model pulls data from the National Weather Service, weather stations and snow plow sensors across the state.

In Eau Claire County, these improvements provide more information to drivers.

“Clairemont Avenue is a main road in Eau Claire, and it’s a road that people depend on to get around, and it wasn’t covered, but it’s part of Highway 12 and with this update , she’s included,” said Sam Simmons, an emergency management program assistant for Eau Claire County.

Simmons said many of the major highways that run through the county are part of the system like US 53, Wisconsin 37 and more.

“It helps us know what’s going on, but it also helps you when you’re about to leave, or if you’re going somewhere outside the county or maybe a few hours away,” Simmons said.

In addition to road conditions, 511 Wisconsin provides information to drivers about construction, accidents and closures.

Just call 511, download the app, or use their website.

For this week’s wintry weather, Simmons and Pierce want to remind drivers to slow down, stay clear of snow plows and check road conditions before setting off.
