Ben Zdan’s purpose-built lobster and crab boat was built in Marathon, Florida in 1973, long before her current skipper was born.

Zdan, 31, acquired it five years ago from a fellow commercial fisherman who was retiring from the company and kept his name because he thought it would be unlucky to change it.

Zdan carried out renovations so thorough on the 48 foot fiberglass that it could pass for new. New deck, gunwales, wheelhouse, hydraulic systems, AC cooled cabin and two year old diesel engine.

It catches 6,000 crab traps and 2,500 lobster traps from summer to spring in deep and shallow waters from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico west to the Dry Tortugas, using a tunnel hull. that only pulls three feet.

Zdan began his career as a charter boat captain, leading a 52-foot Viking sport fisherman for a Middle Keys couple who decided to engage in commercial trapping and then made him a partner. Zdan has a free hand in running the business.

“I have fished here my whole life,” Zdan said. “Lobster and stone crab, that’s all I do. “
